According to a report of World Health Organization, more than 80% of world’s populations depend on traditional medicine for their primary health care needs. A popular local quote of the Bengalis in the Western Himalayan region of India which translates as - A man cannot die of disease in an area where Vitex negundo Linn, Adhatoda vasica and Acorus calamus are found. The plant is referred in the Indian traditional circles as “sarvaroganivarini” (the remedy for many diseases). As Nirgundi is well known drug by common people and easily available hence this drug needs a literary review. Many research has been carried out on this plant. Regarding the etymology, synonyms, morphological description, may explore further therapeutic quality for the benefit of public in larger extent. In present context, therapeutic utility is discussed, there are enormous descriptions found in all most all samhitas and nighantus. By observing the morphology, therapeutic utility, habit and habitat different Acharyas have placed Nirgundi under different varga (group) for convenience of study.

Constituents and Active Compounds of Crude Herb

The plant is rich in large number of secondary metabolites. The presence of some of these phyto chemicals in different extracts. Monoterpenes agnuside, flavonoids- casticin, chryso-splenol and vitexin, flavonoids (vitexicarpin) also, 5,3-dihydroxy-3,6,7,4’-tetramethoxyllavone and hydroxy-3,6,7,3’,4’-penta-methoxy flavone from the leaves.Seeds of Vitex negundo L agorded a new lignin characterized as 6-hydroxy-4-4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl), 3-hydroxymethyl-7- methoxy-3,4-dihydro-2-naphthaldehyde by spectroscopic methods and triterpenoids (betulinic acid and ursolic acid), lignans (negundins, vitedonin), alkaloid (vitrafalal) and diterpene (vitedoin) investigated.
