Introduction

It is one of the popular flavoring herbs as it is 50 times sweeter than sugar due to presence of a compound called glycyrrhizin. Licorice locally known as mulethi has been known for century’s as a medicinally herb in ayurveda. The sanskrit name for licorice is yashtimadhu which literally means sweet root. Licorice may also use in cosmetic application its skin whitening, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties suggest its use for topical application.

Ayurvedic potential of extract:

It is sweet, cool and heavy to digest. The Rasa (taste) of this herb is madhura (sweet), which makes it beneficial for vata and pitta doshas, while it’s Virya (action) is sheetal (cooling), which generally increases kapha when consumed in large doses over long term.

Chemical composition/ Key active constituents of Licorice

Licorice root contains triterpenoid saponins (4–20%), mostly glycyrrhizin, a mixture of potassium and calcium salts of 18β-glycyrrhizic acid which is the major bioactive compound in the underground parts, which also called glycyrrhizic or glycyrrhizinic acid and a glycoside of glycyrrhetinic acid. Licorice root also contains other triterpenes included liquiritic acid, glycyrretol, glabrolide, isoglaborlide and licorice acid. 18β-glycyrrhizic acid (3-O-(2-O-β-d-glucopyranuronosyl–α-d-glucopyranurosyl)-3-β-hydroxy-11-oxo-18β, 20β-olean-12-en-29-oic acid).Flavonoids and chalcones, phenolic content are also found in licorice root.
