In India, henna is a major commercial crop in the northwestern states where the climate is relatively hot and dry. Constituents and Active Compounds of Crude Herb

The principal colouring matter of henna is lawsone, 2- hydroxy-1:4 napthaquinone, 2- hydroxy-1:4 napthaquinone, besides lawsone other constituents present are gallic acid, glucose, mannitol, fats, resin, mucilage and traces of an alkaloid, hennatannic acid, fatty oils composed of behenic acid, arachidic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. Tannins like gallic acid.The unsaponified matter of henna contains waxes and colouring matter and the root contains a red colouring matter too.
